Football & Cheerleading Registration - Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions   •   Cheer Questions   •   Football Questions

What is the Anticipated Time Commitment?
Practices for each season begin on the first Monday in August.  For the month of August, until school starts, cheer practices three days a week – Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 6:00pm-8:00pm.  When school starts, we reduce practices to Tuesday and Thursday.

Our cheer squads cheer for the WYFCP football teams.  Games are Saturdays and begin as early as 9:00am for the youngest girls and as late as 6:00pm for the oldest girls.  Games usually last 1-1/2 hours.

How Long Does the Season Last?
The season begins on the fist Monday in August and runs through the MMYFCL Super Bowl in late October. Cheer squads are expected to cheer through the entire football season.   The cheer season ends with a cheer competition on a Sunday in early November.

Where Does Cheer Practice?
From August – September, Cheer practices at Mayeski Park on the football field.  The first Tuesday in October, practices move to various indoor venues around Winfield and Eldersburg.  Because of the limited availability of indoor space, practice nights may change for some squads once we move indoors – but we work very hard to accommodate schedules as much as possible.

Where are the Games Played?
WYFCP’s home field is at Mayeski Park – next to South Carroll High School off of Route 26.  MMYFCL
programs are located throughout Carroll and Howard County – with a few programs located in Frederick County.  So games can be played at a variety of locations.  However, because WYFCP fields two division of football, there are many weekends when we have teams playing at home, so many weekends cheer will stay home.

Whether cheer is travelling or not, we make every effort to keep all cheer squads at the same location to help families with more than one child in the program.

Are There Any Attendance Requirement?
Cheer is the ultimate team sport.  Coaches and trainers put together routines that require the participation of every girl on the squad.  Attendance at practices and games is very important.  Repeated unexcused absences from practice or missing more than two games may result in a girl not being permitted to participate in the competition.  Practices the two weeks before competition are mandatory.  WYFCP realizes that many families take vacations in the summer, so attendance requirements begin once school starts.

Do I Need to Buy My Daughter’s Uniform?
No – WYFCP provides the uniform for your daughter to wear for the season.  Our uniforms consist of a skirt, body liner and a vest.  Parents will need to purchase the following:  bloomers for under the skirt, cheer shoes, and black leggings for colder weather.  WYFCP also offers a cheer jacket for purchase. The jacket has the WYFCP logo and can have your daughter’s name printed on the front.

How Are the Squads Set Up?
Because MMYFCL programs participate in a cheer competition, the league determines the age groups for our squads.  WYFCP fields up to seven squads depending on registrations.  Typically our squads are as follows:

One Exhibition Squad – ages 4-6 (this squad cheers for our instructional football team whose games are usually played on Friday nights)

Six Competition Squads as follows ages: 6-8; 7-9; 8-10; 9-11; 10-12; 11-13.

Placement on one of the squads is determined first by age and then by years of cheerleading experience.

Squad size is also set by the league at a maximum of 30 girls per squad.

I Have Heard that WYFCP Cheer has a Competition in November – what is that about?
Yes – all of WYFCP Cheer Squads participate in an MMYFCL Cheer Competition in early November.  The competition includes most of the squads from all of the programs in the league.

It is held in a large venue – last year it was at Cole Field House at the University of Maryland – with as many as 60 squads participating at various age levels.

The competition requires significant practice – league bylaws allow for practices up to five times a week the two weeks before competition – and hard work.  It is viewed as the “Super Bowl” for cheer and is an exciting opportunity for the girls to show off what they have learned throughout the season.
